Chia Seeds

Chia seeds

This modern day superfood is an edible seed and has a nut-like flavor. They come from a flowering plant in the mint family, growing natively in South America.  Interestingly, Chia seeds were an important food for the Mayans and Aztecs.  They prized them for their ability to provide sustainable energy… in fact, “chia” is the ancient Mayan word for “strength.”

Despite their ancient history as a dietary staple, only recently did chia seeds become recognized as a popular superfood.

Chia seeds are high in omega -3 fatty acids!  Omega-3’s are known to reduce inflammation and help the body fight off some of the effects of aging. You do not have to grind the seeds in order for your body to use them and they do not spoil quickly, making it a convenient addition to your diet. The chia seeds are hydrophilic; they hold up to 27 times their weight in water. A couple of tablespoons of chia seeds have a respectable amount of antioxidants, fiber, protein, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc and manganese. They can also lower your blood pressure!!
